When Does Medicare Coverage Start?

Did you know that nearly 65 million Americans are currently using Medicare? That means nearly 20% of the entire United States population is utilizing the health insurance provided by the government.

Do you qualify for Medicare benefits yet? If not, when does Medicare coverage start? Know the answer to these questions and you can realize when it is best for you to sign up for Medicare.

Our handy guide will walk you through all the key information that you need to know about Medicare. So continue reading and get prepped to enroll in the best form of health insurance.

When You Turn 65

When you turn 65, you are eligible for Medicare coverage. Medicare is a government health insurance program that helps pay for medical expenses for people 65 and older.

There are four parts to Medicare: Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Part A covers hospital expenses, Part B covers doctor visits, Part C is a managed care plan, and Part D covers prescription drugs. You can sign up for Medicare coverage through the Social Security Administration.

If You’re Disabled

If you’re receiving disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA), you’re automatically enrolled in Medicare. It starts on the first day of the month you’re entitled to disability benefits. For example, if you become disabled on May 15, your Medicare coverage will begin on July 1.

As soon as you’re enrolled, you’ll get a red, white, and blue Medicare card in the mail. If you have other health insurance, you should wait to enroll in Medicare until your other coverage ends.

You can then avoid paying late penalties by enrolling during a Special Enrollment Period. If you have any questions about your coverage, you can contact the SSA. If you need Medicare supplemental plans, click for more assistance programs.

If You Have ALS

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Over time, ALS leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventually death. There is currently no cure for this, but treatments can help manage symptoms and extend life expectancy.

If you have ALS, your Medicare coverage starts the first day of the month you’re diagnosed. You don’t have to wait for your Medicare card to arrive to start using your benefits.

It will cover most of your medical care. This includes inpatient and outpatient care, equipment, and therapies. You may also be eligible for hospice care and home health services.

Knowing When Does Medicare Coverage Start

So, when does Medicare coverage start? The answer depends on a few different factors. If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’re likely eligible for Medicare coverage.

You can also sign up for Medicare if you’re over the age of 65, even if you’re not receiving Social Security benefits. You can contact the SSA or your local Medicare office for more information.
