We are, by our very nature, social creatures, and much of our well-being depends on us staying that way. Participating in a social group can have a huge influence on the choices you make. This means that choosing your social network wisely is paramount to how your decisions will be shaped throughout your life. We are all individuals, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t take notes on what’s going on around us.

Your social network will inevitably influence how you react to situations in your life. If you have found friends from sporting activities and other like-minded interests then they are likely to promote healthy choices.

The people around you can be great motivators. It’s important to have people around you who have similar goals. That way, if you’re ever running out of steam, the people in your life will understand how you’re feeling and what it takes to get back on your feet again. 

When you are in regular contact with people who have similar goals you always have an open forum for sharing ideas and helping each other out as you all progress individually and collectively.

The importance of talking to friends and family when it comes to coping with stress is unquestionable. Trying to tackle stressful times alone can often bring about more stress. You don’t know if you’re making the right decisions, or whether or not you can handle things.

Having a social support system in place means you can reach out to people who know you in times of need. They can help you to talk through situations and can help you to find solutions. More often than not, knowing that people are there when life gets difficult can make all the difference in how well you cope.  

4. Promotes Long-Term Mental Health

We’re social creatures! Socializing is a crucial part of how we develop as individuals. How we fit into society is a huge point of reference for how we’re doing! By regularly engaging in open and honest conversations with peers, friends, and family we always have a way of checking in on how we’re doing and we’re feeling.

Socializing is a part of developing and maintaining cognitive health. When we stop interacting with others or start hiding our true selves, we lose touch with who we are. This leads to feelings of isolation, self-conflict, and can develop into depression and other mental health issues. 

The Importance of Social Support

Building a strong social support network is like an investment in your well-being and the well-being of others. Joining clubs, volunteering, or enrolling back in education are just a few of the ways you can start to build your social network. Make sure you’re as available for the people in your life as you would like them to be for you.
