Having a self-care routine can be the best way to ensure you take care of yourself. Make sure to include some of these steps in your routine.

‘Self-care’ is a phrase we’ve been hearing more and more recently. But what does it really mean? It’s easy to assume that it’s all about candlelit baths and fresh bedding.

Whilst that is a great way to nourish yourself, self-care can actually be a little more subtle. You may be wondering what sort of small changes you can make to feel better day-to-day. For easy ways to improve your self-care routine read on!

  1. Get More Sleep

How much sleep do you get? And how much of that is quality sleep? In times of stress, it can be one of the first things we neglect. But it’s crucial for our bodies to repair and rest. It’s also important not to sleep too much, as this can lead to lethargy.

  1. Fuel Your Body

In a similar way – when we’re feeling a bit low, food can be one of the first things that we abuse. Your body needs the right fuel to function optimally. Comfort foods are a quick fix but can ultimately make us feel worse. Taking time to plan healthy, balanced meals will make the world of difference to how you feel.

  1. Cook For Yourself

In continuation from the last point – cooking your favorite dish for yourself can be a great act of self-care. Cooking can be very therapeutic, and treating yourself to something that you have prepared from scratch is a good feeling.

  1. Get Moving

It might feel like the last thing you want to do, but a little exercise can go a long way. Even low-impact exercise like yoga or walking can release endorphins – giving you a natural boost.

  1. Time in Nature

Studies have shown that taking a walk in nature can be great for our wellbeing. Reconnecting with the natural environment and getting fresh air can stimulate the brain and boost creativity.

  1. Animal Company

Our furry friends are not just companions, they are also able to have a positive impact on our mental wellbeing. Spending time petting or playing with an animal can be calming for the brain and releases dopamine – a feel-good hormone.

  1. Just Say No

Sometimes self-care can be as simple as saying no. If you have social commitments which will drain rather than enrich you, send your apologies and rest instead! It’s important that you recharge so that you can be the life and soul of the party next time.

  1. Ask For Help

Whatever your current struggle is – you never have to battle it alone. A problem shared is a problem halved, so reach out to a friend.

Or maybe it’s time for you to get some professional advice about how to change some destructive habits.

  1. Get Lost in a Book

Reading is a great way to consciously rest. Becoming immersed in a good story can provide a little light escapism. It’s also an alternative to TV, which is ideal for avoiding too much screen time. Speaking of which…

  1. Limit Social Media

Although it’s now one of our main ways to connect with others, social media can also have a negative impact on wellbeing.

Try becoming more aware of your scrolling time, and look at installing an app to reduce your social media time.

  1. Try Journaling

Rather than sharing your latest activities online, why not start writing them down instead? Journaling has been found to be very positive for mental health. It’s also something that you can look back on in the future.

  1. Meditation

Practiced for thousands of years across the world. Meditation is a powerful tool to calm the mind. Practicing regularly can ease mental health problems and increase focus and clarity.

  1. Take a Bath

Ok, sometimes self-care actually is a bubble bath with candles! Create a mini spa experience for yourself with soothing music and your favorite scents. You’re worth it!
