The 17 Point Ultimate Underwater Fishing Checklist Before You Point the Hook

The experience of underwater fishing is incredible! So many people enjoy this great activity, with 16.5% of the US population fishing at least once.

Because of time constraints, however, most of us don’t get to do it nearly as often as we’d like.

When you finally get the opportunity to go on a fishing trip, the last thing you want is to ruin your adventure by forgetting to take along essential fishing gear.

Prepare for a successful and safe deep-sea fishing expedition by bringing the following things with you. Read on to discover our underwater fishing guide.

Underwater Fishing Gear

Let’s start with the basics. You’ll need a fishing rod and reel. Along with a tackle, you’ll need line, hooks, and sinkers to get started. What kind you use depends on the types of fish you plan to catch.

You may either bring your bait or begin your excursion by catching fresh perch to use as bait. If you plan to catch your bait, you’ll need the appropriate equipment.

Here is a handy underwater fishing checklist of gear you’ll need on your trip:

  • Tacklebox (fish stringer, bobbers, hooks, weights, power bait, extra fishing line, lures, jigs, leaders, and sinkers)
  • Fishing license
  • Live bait (keep live bait out of sunlight)
  • Fishing poles (check the local underwater fishing requirements for how many fishing poles you can use in your area)
  • Best underwater fishing camera
  • Hand sanitizer
  • First aid kit (a small kit designed for outdoors is ideal)
  • Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses
  • A few clean towels
  • Insect repellant
  • Water bottle
  • Portable GPS or fish finder
  • Compass
  • Map of fishing area
  • Soft tape measurer (to measure the size of your catch)
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Blade knife

Wear the Right Clothing

Be sure to dress appropriately, but keep in mind that the weather at sea can be quite different than at home or at your hotel, so make sure you pack accordingly. Clothes that dry quickly and provide UV protection are preferred for underwater fishing.

If it’s supposed to be warm, a pair of shorts and a light-colored short-sleeved shirt are great options. If it’s cooler, wear long pants instead of shorts and carry a sweatshirt or pullover for added warmth.

Because you’ll be on your feet a lot, choose footwear with a soft rubber sole that gives a good grip on slick decks while still providing adequate support. Also, take gloves with you to keep your hands safe from bites, line cuts, the sun, and cold or rainy weather.

Go on Your Underwater Fishing Trip

Now that you’ve got all the underwater fishing tips you need, it’s time to gather your gear and plan your trip!

One more tip: as you pack your gear, be sure to do your research and purchase quality fishing gear for your needs.

There’s a lot to deep-sea fishing, but with some planning and the best gear, you’ll have a fantastic time. Bring this equipment, and you won’t have to return to shore for forgetting something.
