5 of the Most Affectionate Pets to Have

Some pets are more affectionate than others. Here’s a quick breakdown on some of the friendliest animals:

1. Dogs

Dogs are referred to as “man’s best friend” for good reason. Not only are they loyal but they’re extremely affectionate. When you think about it, it’s not too surprising—after all, they’ve been bred and conditioned for thousands of years!

Social animals, they love bonding with their family members. Their tendency to lick their owners is a prime example of them showing affection.

Which dog breed is the most affectionate? Golden retrievers, greyhounds, and bull terriers.

2. Cats

Cats are often described as being cold and aloof. While that might be true for some, many are in fact, quite affectionate.

If anything, they just show their affection differently than dogs. Instead of licking, they’re more likely to rub up against you, follow you around, and snuggle up against your body.

3. Pot-Bellied Pigs

Pot-bellied pigs are not only intelligent, but they’re affectionate as well. Highly social, they respond well to touch. For example, many enjoy being patted by their owners.

You can tell whether or not they’re being affectionate by their behavior. For example, a pig that likes you will likely wag their tail, squeal, lick, or rub their nose on you.

4. Rats

Rats don’t exactly have the best reputation. The truth, however, is that they’re very smart and affectionate. With proper training, they can even learn tricks!

For the most part, they love hanging out with their owners—whether it’s being in the same room or in their pocket. Highly playful, they also like solving puzzles.

5. Horses

Given proper care, horses can form incredible bonds with their human owners. Not only are they capable of recognizing people, but they can also reflect on the behaviors of those around them!

In fact, equine therapy is a thing. Studies have shown that spending time with horses can actually benefit those who’re struggling with addiction.
